Silence As The Smoke Settles

It all started a few years back; my dad developed a bad cough, his voice sounded like he had screamed all night long and could hardly talk the next day. He had also started becoming less active and less motivated to do anything. Now something you must understand, my dad is one of those guys that will work till his last day on earth. Well in 2017 my dad became very ill to the point where, as stubborn as he is, went to the Doctor. It turned out that he had cancer of the throat, from exposure to agent orange, affecting his larynx. So he went to the VA hospital for his testing, Laryngectomy, recovery and chemotherapy treatments. During the days after his surgery, while he was in his recovery room, one family member would stay in his room while everyone else would take my mom to lunch. Well, it became my turn to sit in and as I sat there looking at my dad in his hospital bed, I replayed in my head something that my mom told me that I found odd. She had told me that my dad had not been watching war movies and turned down offers to watch them. Now as far back as I can remember my dad has never passed on watching war movies, so this struck me as odd. I started doing a little research on reasons why this may be happening and found that it is more common than I realized. I found that sometimes when older Veterans slow down in their life ex: retire, kids move out, etc. they end up developing PTSD because their brains have nothing to keep them occupied. My dad has since passed in 2020 and I have made a promise to myself that we will complete this movie to bring awareness to all. We may not be able to stop war or PTSD but, we can make sure those who need help get it and know that they are not alone in this fight.
